Community Involvement

At Rice Epicurean Markets, service to our community is essential to our success and has been one of the cornerstones of our mission since 1937. We strive to improve the quality of life in our communities through financial giving, and involvement in various community activities throughout the year.

We are fortunate to have customers who care about others, and who trust us to do our part. It's an honor for us to give back to the community whenever possible.

Consideration for Every Request

We carefully consider each submitted request for assistance and seek out the advice and opinions of our colleagues and customers. We seek to support the charities and groups that truly need our help, and we are confident that our sponsorships provide a blend of community and corporate values.

Rice Epicurean Markets is proud to be a corporate contributor in our community. We understand that the need is great, and we support as many events and organizations as we can, but unfortunately, Rice is limited to the confines of our allotted annual giving budget.

Our System of Rotated Giving

Each year Rice receives more requests for support than we can possibly fund, so many requests are declined, even though they meet our funding requirements, and are worthwhile endeavors.  If Rice donates to an organization this year, it's quite possible that we will be unable to donate next year, so we can assist another organization.

Programs We Currently Support

Food Banks through in-kind product donations.

Education/Youth Programs: Support is considered for organizations that provide direct service to a large number of individuals in the community, provide services to families, and meet multiple needs of their clients. Priority is given to projects that directly benefit children, promote the education of children, or encourage the positive development of children.

Community Development: Support is considered for community and civic organizations that request help with operations or projects that focus on civic involvement, citizen participation, or positive improvements that benefit the community.

The Arts: Support is considered for cultural and arts organizations that serve broad audiences whose programming is of the highest quality.

Neighborhood Activities: Consideration for support of projects is granted to local, non-profit, grass-roots organizations that focus their efforts on improving the immediate community through activities that benefit families in their neighborhoods.

Rice is not able to make donations to for-profit organizations or to third-party organizations. It is our policy to support an organization directly rather than support a third-party event that benefits a charity. Rice also does not support the following type of functions or events:

* Scholarship programs
* Research or building projects
* Religious bodies
* Political bodies
* Golf tournaments
* Fun runs

 Rice Epicurean Markets will launch the Food for All® community hunger program, providing grants to organizations fighting hunger through self-help methods. Food for All®  is a partnership between Rice Epicurean Markets and the Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger. As our grocery store customers are paying for their groceries, they may elect to make a $1, $3 or $5 contribution, which is added to their grocery bill. Of the funds collected, Rice Epicurean will in turn donate over one-half of the money raised (in food / food products) to a local food charity while the remaining amount will fund long term, self-help anti-hunger programs in our country and around the world including Africa, Asia and Central and South America. There are no program expenses related to this campaign—every penny donated goes towards fighting hunger.

The campaign runs annually during the 4th quarter.
The Holiday Shopping Card is a unique fundraising event in Houston sponsored by VICTORY, a volunteer fundraising branch of the American Cancer Society. During the fall of each year, in partnership with area merchants, VICTORY offers The Holiday Shopping Card directly to the public.

For a minimum $70 donation, shoppers receive a 20% discount at over 750  participating merchants during a predetermined eleven-day shopping spree.

The entire amount is contributed to the American Cancer Society and is tax-deductible. Your donation will help make a difference in the lives of Houston cancer patients and their families. The Holiday Shopping Card is available for sale at all Rice Epicurean Markets. On sale dates are determined by Victory, a division of American Cancer Society.

Serving Houstonians Since 1937

Our grandparents opened the family's first store in 1937 on Rice Blvd. in the village when streets were still oyster shells. When our grandfather William asked our Grandmother Edna what the store's name shoud be, she said "What street is it on?" Find our more about Rice Epicurean's history »
